WE Lab Health Research and Advocacy Fellowship Application
Mission Statement:
The WeEmbody Lab Health Research and Advocacy Fellowship aims to provide University of New Haven students the opportunity to engage in research-to-policy translation. Translating and disseminating evidence-based information for policymakers and advocates are recommended strategies to help reduce gaps in health status and care for racial/ethnic minorities and other marginalized populations. By the completion of the fellowship, selected undergraduate and graduate students will demonstrate the skills to advocate for public policies aimed at promoting health equity.
Overview:
As part of this program, around 4-6 fellows will be selected from a competitive pool of applicants.
This year, the WE Lab aims to recruit students to attend the American Public Health Association's Policy Action Institute in Washington, D.C. You can learn more about this event here: https://www.apha.org/policy-action-institute.
Students will travel to Washington, D.C., from June 15th-16th for this valuable training (though dates may change).
Example activities include:
Meeting with local lawmakers and community leaders
Completing various trainings to learn how to develop effective policy briefs and fact sheets for policymakers, community leaders, and other key stakeholders
Traveling to Washington, DC to meet with legislators and public health leaders
Requirements:
As part of this program, fellows will:
Develop a policy brief on a public health issue
Develop a concise summary sheet of pertinent research articles on a health topic
Participate in a final presentation of their fellowship experience, including their advocacy training and other efforts
Furthermore, fellows will also be required to keep a digital journal to document their experiences in the program and will receive feedback for their entries.
Eligibility:
Current University of New Haven student (undergraduate or graduate)
Must have successfully completed at least one semester at the University of New Haven
Rising first year – junior student (unless the student will be completing a graduate degree at UNH the succeeding fall semester)
GPA > 3.4
Availability to attend required fellowship activities planned before and after the Washington, D.C. trip
Fellows must attend the entirety of the APHA Policy Action Institute
Students graduating in May 2023 are not eligible due to funding restrictions. Interviews with competitive applicants may be requested.
